Save Time & Make Money: Clothing Consignment w/ HandPickedByHan
/What is your time worth?
Time is our most valuable resource. We all are given the same amount, and we all want more. That is why I spend a significant amount of time challenging clients to rethink their relationship with their "shoulds."
"I should do this... or "I should sell this...".
This is especially the case when it comes to women and their wardrobes.
Many clients have experience trying to resell their clothes online or using local consignment shops to offload their goods. Guilt and shame associated with the cost of fashion often drive the desire to recoup the money spent on clothing, but with little regard for the precious time spent on that process.
Suppose you're feeling overwhelmed and juggling a hundred other responsibilities. Why would you task yourself with trying to consign or resell your clothes when there are professionals out there who can do it faster, better and offer you a greater rate of return?
My advice to anyone looking to recoup some money on their wardrobe would be to outsource the process.
This month I am featuring Minnesota clothing consignment expert, Hannah Morton w/ HandPickedByHan. I encourage you to learn more about the process of consigning and give yourself permission to simplify your closet by working with an independent expert!
What compelled you to start reselling clothes?
I have always loved the thrill of finding a great deal, so shopping secondhand was both practical and a fun way for me to fill my closet. When I was a junior in college, I decided to resell a few pieces from my closet, and I was shocked when they sold immediately and for more than I had purchased them for at my local thrift. I was hooked. I've been reselling clothes ever since and have expanded my business to offer consignment services both locally and around the United States within the last few years. What started as a service offered to a select number of clients has grown significantly since the COVID-19 shutdowns in 2020. Many local donations sites were closed during this time, leaving people with unwanted items stored in their homes. Providing an outlet for people to offload their unwanted clothing, shoes, and accessories while making a profit showed great value to many people then and now!
What makes working with an independent, online consignor more beneficial than a storefront consignor?
When you choose to work with HandPickedByHan instead of going to your local buy-sell-trade (BST) stores, you can profit significantly more on your preloved clothing, shoes, and accessories. Most consignment stores are competing with thrift store prices, making your return on each sale very minimal. We can price our items based on their competitive resale value instead of a fixed dollar amount that most BST stores work off of. We research every brand and style that comes to us and price each item based on our competitive research. Instead of making $7 on your designer coat, you could make $80+ consigning with us.
What types of clothing or accessory items make the most money for your consignment clients?
Right now, we're finding the best profit margins on shoes, coats, jackets, and dresses. We accept all categories and seasons of clothing, shoes, bags, and accessories, from blouses to winter jackets, sneakers to heels, and scarves to hats.
Are there items you commonly turn away?
We turn away items if they show significant signs of wear like pilling, stains, or holes, or if we know the style or brand will not sell based on our experience. We choose not to accept some items, but we have an average 90% acceptance rate.
How much time does it take you to prepare, post, and sell an item online?
Accepting your clothes to getting them listed online is usually a 2-week turnaround. Once the items have been picked up, dropped off, or delivered via mail, we sort through your items. We choose what to sell, input all accepted items into our inventory system, clean and steam them, photograph and model them, edit, list, and market each item daily. Then we sell, ship, and repeat. Best of all— you don't have to live in Minnesota to work with us! Instead of waiting for something to sell, we proactively work to get your item in front of as many eyes as possible by ensuring they show up at the top of every search engine; thus, securing a quick sale!
If someone would like to start working with HandPickedByHan, where should they start?
We love accepting new consignment clients! Simply fill out the request form on our website to start the process, and we will reach out within 24 hours to confirm logistics. We are based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, and accept local drop-offs and pick-ups. For people outside of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, we will pay to have your items shipped to us.
